    Opened in 1937 as Miklós Horthy Bridge, this crossing was partly a Depression-era public-works project and initially led toward a sparsely developed Buda riverbank. Retreating German forces destroyed it in 1945; its 1952 replacement inherited the name of a temporary pontoon bridge and was politically recast as a socialist “structure of peace.”
