  • Museum

    Found Museum

The walls of this bungalow are covered with more than 2,100 discarded address plates rescued from demolished urban villages. Inside, keys, diaries, photographs, work certificates and shop equipment preserve the intimate traces of migrant families whose former neighborhoods have vanished beneath redevelopment.

  • Straßen & Viertel

    Longjin West Road Qilou Block

Numbers 55–67 form an unusually intact Republican-era row of four-story qilou shop-houses, their sheltered pavement carried beneath residences and Ionic-style columns. The block records the transformation of Longjin from a waterside settlement into a modern commercial road after its expansion around 1930, while its ground-floor businesses still preserve the arcade’s original everyday purpose.

  • Architektur

    Wenta Pagoda

No surviving record securely identifies who built this small waterside tower, but Pantang tradition says villagers raised it to improve the community’s scholarly fortune and examination success. Nearby stonework once connected the site with a royal flower garden of the Southern Han period, although those inscriptions later disappeared.

  • Architektur

    Pazhou Pagoda

Built in 1600, this pagoda stood on what was then a river island beside the Whampoa anchorage. For captains arriving to trade at Canton, its silhouette served as a navigational marker and announced that their ships were approaching the compulsory stopping place below the Thirteen Factories.

  • Architektur

    Chigang Pagoda

Chigang Pagoda was the last of Guangzhou's great river pagodas seen by ships sailing from Whampoa toward the walled city and the Thirteen Factories. Its carved figures include distinctly foreign-looking tower bearers, an unusual architectural reminder of the overseas merchants who followed this route.

  • Architektur

    Pan Family Compound

This surviving compound was developed around 1826 by Pan Zhengwei, heir to one of the most powerful Thirteen Factories merchant families. Pan combined collecting and refined domestic architecture with the dangerous obligations of a hong merchant, later contributing heavily to Guangzhou's defense during the First Opium War.

  • Archäologische Stätte

    Huangpu Ancient Port

During the Canton System, foreign ocean-going ships were ordered to anchor at Whampoa rather than sail directly to the Thirteen Factories. Cargo was registered, inspected and transferred into smaller boats here, making this quiet inlet the outer-port counterpart to the crowded merchant enclave upriver.

  • Ufer

    Donghaochong Moat and Museum

Donghaochong is the only surviving moat of old Guangzhou, once carrying market boats, draining the walled city and supplying residents with water. After becoming badly polluted during rapid urbanization, it was restored as a canal walk; two Republican-era houses beside it now form a small museum about the waterway's rise, decline and rescue.

  • Theater & Kultur

    Bahe Guild Hall

Bahe began as a Cantonese-opera performers’ association in 1889, organizing a precarious trade of itinerant companies and specialized stage workers. In 1946 overseas performers in the United States and Singapore contributed US$10,000 to purchase this Enning Road headquarters, helping the opera community rebuild after war and displacement.

  • Kirche

    Sanyuan Palace

A Taoist temple dedicated to the Three Great Emperor-Officials, with a history of religious transformation.

  • Architektur

    Former Soviet Consulate

Known as Shamian's Western Red Building, this consulate was swept into the violence following the failed Guangzhou Uprising in December 1927. Nationalist forces raided the mission, arrested its staff and executed five Soviet employees and several Chinese employees, helping precipitate China's break in relations with the Soviet Union.

  • Museum

    Lingnan School Memorial Hall

A torch-like white dome inside the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts commemorates the painters who argued that Chinese painting should absorb modern life and selected foreign techniques rather than merely copy old masters. Statues of Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng, and Chen Shuren stand before the building, which was completed in 1991 and substantially restored before reopening in 2024.

  • Architektur

    Chen Lianbo Mansion

This canal-side mansion belonged to banker and merchant leader Chen Lianbo, whose adjoining private landing allowed guests to arrive by launch. Its rooms hosted the Liwan Club, where commercial elites mixed business with politics before Chen’s armed Merchant Corps came into violent conflict with Sun Yat-sen’s government in 1924.

  • Architektur

    Sun Yat-sen University South Campus

A large ensemble of 74 historic red-brick buildings from the Lingnan era.

  • Kirche

    Haichuang Temple

A historic Buddhist temple and monastery in Guangzhou, known for its rich history and cultural significance.

  • Park & Garten

    Yuntai Garden

A garden at the foot of Baiyun Mountain, modeled after Canada's Butchart Gardens, where tulips are cultivated in a subtropical climate.

  • Park & Garten

    Yuyin Garden

A dense Qing private garden in Panyu, one of the four famous Lingnan gardens, built by the scholar Wu Bin.

  • Straßen & Viertel

    Baohan Straight Street

This short lane through Dengfeng became Guangzhou's best-known African street after traders and residents began settling nearby in growing numbers during the 1990s. Freight services, halal restaurants, currency exchange, beauty businesses and multilingual shop signs turned an old urban-village street into a piece of transnational West Africa, though repaving and tighter management have reduced its former pavement economy.

  • Museum

    Liwan Museum (Chen Lianzhong Residence)

Silk merchant and HSBC comprador Chen Lianzhong built this hybrid mansion with European arches, columns and a Chinese garden beside the old waterways. Now incorporated into Liwan Museum, it stands beside a reconstructed Xiguan mansion whose interiors explain how wealthy merchant families actually lived behind their imposing doors.

  • Kirche

Yangji Yuxu Palace and Ancestral Hall Square

Before demolition, this roughly 900-year-old village housed about 5,000 local residents and more than 15,000 migrants in a maze of rental buildings. A three-year dispute ended when the final holdout house was demolished in August 2013; Yuxu Palace remained as the sole old structure while the clan halls were reconstructed together beside the new residential towers.

  • Museum

    Liede Village History Museum

Liede changed from a water village crowded with handshake buildings into a high-rise enclave of 37 residential towers at the edge of Guangzhou's new business district. The village history museum, deliberately conceived as a repository of nostalgia, uses donated objects and reconstructed scenes to tell what was lost when fields, lanes and rental rooms became premium real estate.
