Warum der Umweg sich lohnt

This small guild hall belongs to the martial performers of Cantonese opera—the specialists responsible for combat, acrobatics, falls, and dangerous stage business. Its name refers to the palanquin they traditionally carried while guarding the image of theatrical patron deity Huaguang during processions; practitioners still demonstrate southern-style opera combat and the red-boat wooden dummy tradition here.

Luan Yu Hall is a small guild hall dedicated to the martial performers of Cantonese opera, specializing in combat and acrobatics. It offers a unique glimpse into the traditional arts of Cantonese opera and its cultural significance.

    Former Jinsheng Cinema

Opened in 1934, Jinsheng was a six-story arcade cinema backed by returned overseas merchants and remembered as Guangzhou’s first air-conditioned movie house. The auditorium was demolished during redevelopment in 2010, but the surviving entrance and sign remain like a stage set for a theater that has vanished behind them.
