Monrepos Library Wing

Warum der Umweg sich lohnt

This modest wing eventually housed the Nicolays' collection of more than 9,000 volumes, one of the largest private libraries in the Grand Duchy of Finland. Its nucleus was the romantically named "Library of Two Friends," begun by Ludwig Nicolay and Franz Hermann Lafermière as students; the collection was later given to the University of Helsinki on condition that it remain undivided.

The Monrepos Library Wing in Vyborg, Russia, is a hidden gem known for its historical significance as the home of a vast private library collection. The library's origins trace back to the 'Library of Two Friends,' a collection started by Ludwig Nicolay and Franz Hermann Lafermière.

Nicolay noted extensive greenhouses even before purchasing Monrepos in 1788, and later gardeners coaxed peaches, apricots, mirabelle plums and espaliered fruit from the northern climate.
