  Museum of Military History

  One gallery preserves the physical evidence of the Sarajevo assassination: the Gräf & Stift automobile carrying Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, the weapons used by the conspirators, and the archduke's bloodstained clothing. The bullet marks make the chain from a wrong turn in Sarajevo to world war and imperial collapse brutally tangible.

  Palais Epstein

  Jewish banker and philanthropist Gustav Ritter von Epstein built this unusually well-preserved Ringstrasse palace as both a family home and bank, even maintaining a discreet room where the poor could request assistance. The crash of 1873 ruined him, forcing the sale of the palace and much of his art collection—a dramatic reversal of the social ascent its sumptuous rooms had proclaimed.   Vienna Central Cemetery

  Vienna eventually gathered many of its musical immortals into one extraordinary neighborhood of graves: Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and both Johann Strausses lie close together in Group 32A. The arrangement creates a posthumous composers’ salon, while Strauss II’s monument adds carved dancers, a Danube mermaid and a bat recalling Die Fledermaus.
