Why go
The first morning, before the groups arrive. By noon the square is full. In the evening the walls are quiet.
Where to stay
Sleep here if you want the square before the groups. It goes quiet early. The station is in the lower town. Carry the suitcase up only if that morning matters.

The funicular sets you down at the eastern edge of the walls, on Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, and Piazza Vecchia is further along Via Gombito. The Colleoni Chapel is behind the Palazzo della Ragione: from the civic square you do not see it until you pass under the arches.
