In the evening after the upper town, or in the hour you arrive. See the Carrara while the rooms are open.
Where to stay
A practical base by the station. The way up is a funicular or a steep walk. Leave the suitcase here if you will not start every morning on the hill.

The Teatro Donizetti stands on the Sentierone, in the flat town, while the Accademia Carrara is by the climb to the eastern gates, a walk uphill from the avenue, not inside the upper walls. Santa Maria delle Grazie is south of the avenue, away from the hill.
