Claus von Stauffenberg was a German army officer and a central figure in the 20 July Plot and Operation Valkyrie. On 20 July 1944, he placed an explosive near Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair. Hitler survived with minor injuries, and Stauffenberg was arrested and executed the following day.

From officer to resistance figure

Born in 1907 into the House of Stauffenberg, he took part in the invasions of Poland and the Soviet Union and in the Tunisian campaign. He later became a key figure in the German resistance to Nazism within the Wehrmacht.

Severely wounded in Tunisia

During the Tunisian campaign, Stauffenberg was severely wounded, losing his left eye, his right hand and two fingers from his left hand.

Operation Valkyrie

Stauffenberg was central to Operation Valkyrie, a plan to arrest the Nazi leadership after Hitler's death and negotiate an end to the Second World War.

The failed bomb attack

On 20 July 1944, Stauffenberg placed an explosive at Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters. Hitler suffered only minor injuries. Stauffenberg and other conspirators were arrested, and he was executed on 21 July 1944.

His family after the plot

His wife, Nina, was arrested after the assassination attempt and gave birth to their fifth child, Konstanze, while imprisoned. Their children also included Berthold, who pursued a military career, and Franz-Ludwig, who became a politician.
