Resistance and imprisonment
The Gestapo arrested Bonhoeffer in April 1943. He spent a year and a half in Tegel Prison before being transferred to Flossenbürg concentration camp. He was hanged on 9 April 1945.

A key founding member of the Confessing Church, he opposed the Nazi euthanasia program and the genocidal persecution of Jews. His writings on Christianity's role in the secular world became widely influential. His family home in Berlin served as his residence and workplace until his arrest there in 1943.

Accused in the July plot
Bonhoeffer was accused of association with the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler. He was tried alongside other accused plotters, including former members of the Abwehr, the German Military Intelligence Office.
