Dora Richter was a German trans woman who lived and worked at Berlin’s Institute for Sexual Research. Under the care of sex researcher Magnus Hirschfeld, she underwent pioneering gender-affirming procedures in 1922 and 1931.

Richter underwent surgical removal of the testicles in 1922, followed by removal of the penis and vaginoplasty in 1931. She is the first known person to have undergone complete male-to-female gender-affirming surgery.

Richter was one of several transgender people cared for by Magnus Hirschfeld at Berlin’s Institute for Sexual Research during the 1920s and early 1930s.
