Adolf Hitler’s longtime companion, a German photographer, and briefly his wife in the Berlin Führerbunker
Eva Braun lived largely outside public view while belonging to Adolf Hitler’s inner social circle. As Nazi Germany collapsed, she went to Berlin and joined him in the Führerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery garden. They married there on 29 April 1945 and died by suicide less than 40 hours later.
Braun met Hitler in Munich in 1929, when she was 17 and working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann. She later became part of Hitler’s household and inner social circle, but much of the German public remained unaware of their relationship until after their deaths.
Braun was a photographer who created many of the surviving colour photographs and films of Hitler.
As Red Army troops fought their way into Berlin’s central government district, Braun married Hitler in a brief civil ceremony on 29 April 1945. She was 33 and he was 56. Less than 40 hours later, both died by suicide in a sitting room of the bunker.
By 1936, Braun was part of Hitler’s household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden and lived a sheltered life throughout the Second World War. She did not attend public events with him until mid-1944, when her sister Gretl married Hermann Fegelein, the SS liaison officer on Hitler’s staff.
