Herbert Marcuse was a German-American philosopher, social critic, and political theorist born in Berlin in 1898. Associated with the Frankfurt School, he examined capitalism, modern technology, Soviet Communism, and popular culture as forms of social control. In the 1960s and 1970s, he became a prominent theorist of the New Left and student movements in West Germany, France, and the United States. He is buried at Dorotheenstadt Cemetery in Berlin.
Marcuse studied at the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin and later at the University of Freiburg, where he received his doctorate under Martin Heidegger's supervision. He became a prominent figure in the Institute for Social Research, later known as the Frankfurt School.
Marcuse's best-known books are Eros and Civilization, published in 1955, and One-Dimensional Man, published in 1964. His writings criticized capitalism, modern technology, Soviet Communism, and popular culture as forms of social control.
Between 1943 and 1950, Marcuse worked in United States government service, including for the Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency. He later criticized Soviet Communist ideology in Soviet Marxism: A Critical Analysis, published in 1958.
Marcuse is buried at Dorotheenstadt Cemetery in Berlin.
