Franz Liszt (1811–1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher whose career spanned more than six decades. His compositions, performances and teaching made him one of the most influential musicians of the Romantic period, while his later experiments anticipated developments in 20th-century music. In 1837, he stayed at the Villa Melzi estate in Bellagio, near Como.
Liszt achieved success as a concert pianist at an early age and studied with Carl Czerny and Antonio Salieri. He later taught hundreds of piano students, many of whom became notable performers, and pioneered the masterclass as a method of teaching performance.
Liszt contributed to the development of the symphonic poem and advanced thematic transformation and Impressionism in music. Some of his later compositions experimented with atonality, anticipating developments in 20th-century classical music.
During his European tours in the 1830s and 1840s, Liszt became renowned for his technical brilliance and stage presence. The intense public enthusiasm surrounding him became known as "Lisztomania".
Liszt was hosted at the Villa Melzi estate during his 1837 stay in Bellagio.
