    Széchenyi Thermal Bath

    Széchenyi began not with a palace but with mining engineer Vilmos Zsigmondy’s risky deep drilling beneath City Park, which produced an artesian bath by 1881. Győző Czigler’s Neo-Baroque complex opened in 1913 and expanded outdoors in 1927, turning communal soaking—and famously chess played in steaming pools—into one of Budapest’s most enduring social rituals.
