The vast cemetery records the confidence and achievement of prewar Jewish Budapest in its elaborate family mausoleums, then abruptly confronts visitors with the community's destruction. Its monumental Holocaust memorial, completed in 1949 and designed by Olympic champion and architect Alfréd Hajós, became one of Hungary's earliest major Shoah memorials.
