Why it is worth the detour
Chigang Pagoda was the last of Guangzhou's great river pagodas seen by ships sailing from Whampoa toward the walled city and the Thirteen Factories. Its carved figures include distinctly foreign-looking tower bearers, an unusual architectural reminder of the overseas merchants who followed this route.
Chigang Pagoda, built in 1619, is a historic architectural landmark in Guangzhou. It stands as a reminder of the city's maritime history and the influence of overseas merchants.
