Why it is worth the detour
Donghaochong is the only surviving moat of old Guangzhou, once carrying market boats, draining the walled city and supplying residents with water. After becoming badly polluted during rapid urbanization, it was restored as a canal walk; two Republican-era houses beside it now form a small museum about the waterway's rise, decline and rescue.
Donghaochong Moat and Museum is a restored canal walk in Guangzhou, showcasing the history of the city's only surviving moat. It features a small museum housed in two Republican-era buildings, detailing the waterway's historical significance and restoration.
