The middle of the park. The Valley of Roses is a lawn planted in even squares of bushes, and in summer people come for the bloom. A little farther is the Temple of Air, a half-rotunda where the cable car leaves. From below, the shorter climb starts at the Cascade Staircase; the longer one comes up from the gallery over Pine Hill. For most visitors this is what 'going up into the park' means, before the high ridge.
Why go
Late morning and the afternoon. In rose season, for the beds. On any clear day, for the temple and the first real view. By evening the paths and the cable car empty out.
Where to stay
This is a daytime outing. Sleep on the boulevard or on Prospekt Mira and come up in the morning. The short climb begins at the Cascade Staircase on Dzerzhinsky Prospect.
