The northwest: Kinkaku-ji by its pond and Kitano Tenmangu. Two gates in one day, with residential blocks between them, not the Shijo shopfronts.
Why go
The pavilion in the morning, the shrine later. The evening is quieter than the centre.
Where to stay
Stay only if you want these two outside the door. Shijo is a ride.
