Kyoto Station: a huge hall, stairs and a roof over the tracks. This is where you arrive, not the old city. The temples start farther north.
Why go
Worth it on the day you arrive, and for the view from the roof. There is no reason to walk between the tracks.
Where to stay
A base if the morning train matters. Higashiyama and Shijo from here are the city, not the station yard.
