Shijo and Kawaramachi: the bridge over the Kamo, shopfronts, department stores and the side streets of Pontocho. A day for the city, not for a temple on the hill.
Why go
Afternoon and evening. In the morning the street has not woken up, and the Higashiyama temples matter more then.
Where to stay
A base if you want the shops and the river outside the door. Kiyomizu from the bridge is already a climb to the east.

Pontocho is the narrow street just north of the bridge, along the river. The Kawaramachi shopfronts stand on the crossing itself.

- アスタルテ書茶房 — Сайдзё принял закрытый в 2024-м салон фантастики и еретической литературы и оставил полки, добавив кофе и вино.
- カフェ・モンタージュ — Маленький зал у Марутамати: в дни без концерта это тихая кофейня, классика с пластинки, один стол на человека.
- 二条小屋 — Кривой послевоенный барак за парковкой у Нидзё. Нисики Акихиро сам наливает кофе под винил; стойка стоячая, вино тоже есть.
