A small quarter on the left bank of the Svislach, just across the bridge from the Upper Town. Low houses with tiled roofs and pastel walls stand on cobbles. This is the look after restoration: a 19th-century face, assembled again. Inside are the Maksim Bahdanovich literary museum, the museum of the history of Belarusian literature and the room of Vladislav Golubok. Some of the houses are still lived in. From the bridge you see the Island of Courage and Sorrow. The opera house, a white 1930s volume, stands at the edge of the quarter on the site of the old Trinity market.

Known for

Pastel tiled houses on the left bank, and a short walk out to the Island of Courage and Sorrow. The opera house stands at the edge of the quarter.

Why go

Come by day and in the early evening, when the facades and the embankment read clearly from the bridge. Mornings are quieter. On weekends the paths fill toward sunset. The Zybitskaya noise stays on the other bank. The island is a memorial. Walk it slowly.

Where to stay

For anyone who wants to wake up by the river and walk to the Upper Town. The quarter is small and, in the evening, calmer than the bar street. Do not count on driving into the narrow lanes.

Local guide

From Niamiha metro the quarter is across the bridge, on the left bank. The Island of Courage and Sorrow is in the river just beside it. The opera house is on Paris Commune Square, at the exit from the lanes. There are few through-streets: enter from the embankment and leave toward the theatre.
