The hill above the Svislach: town hall, two cathedrals, Zybitskaya after dark
Верхні Горад
Freedom Square, Kirilla i Mefodiya, Internatsionalnaya, Revolyutsionnaya, Zybitskaya
A hill above the Svislach where Minsk still has its old street grid. Freedom Square holds the town hall, rebuilt and opened in 2004, with the Holy Spirit Cathedral, the Catholic cathedral of the Virgin Mary, the old trading rows and the Vankovich house on Internatsionalnaya around it. The streets are short, and the courtyards turn into passages such as Muzykalny Lane. Zybitskaya runs at the foot, along the river: a way down from the hill by day, the bar street after dark. The quieter craft rooms of the mid-2010s have closed. What is left plays louder.

The town hall on Freedom Square, two cathedrals on the hill, and Zybitskaya at the foot, where the city goes after dark.
The square is nearly empty in the morning, which is when the facades are easy to read. Midday is for the churches and the town hall. In summer, musicians and city holidays take the square toward evening. The night starts down on Zybitskaya, after nine if you want the noise. By then the hill has already had its walk.
For anyone who wants to step out onto Freedom Square and walk to Trinity Suburb and the river. On weekend nights Zybitskaya is loud under the hill. Light sleepers do better up by the town hall than on the lower addresses.

The town hall stands in the middle of Freedom Square. Zybitskaya drops toward the river, and the castle site is on that descent, before the bridge. Trinity Suburb is on the far bank. Rakov Suburb is to the west, past Nemiga. Climb the hill in the morning. After lunch the lanes are tight.
