The south bank: the Monastery of Serra do Pilar, the Sandeman and Ferreira cellars, and the Luiz I bridge. Porto Cathedral is across the river from here, not inside this ring.

Known for

The Serra do Pilar monastery, the Sandeman and Ferreira lodges and the Dom Luís I bridge on the south bank of the Douro.

Why go

Come after lunch, for the lodges and the view back to the Ribeira. In the morning the boats are still out and the sun hits the quay.

Where to stay

A night makes sense if you want Porto in the window and the cellars downstairs. The Sé is across the bridge. A suitcase is easier here than in the Ribeira lanes.

Local guide

Stay on the south bank of the Douro. The lodges line the quay under the Dom Luís I bridge, Serra do Pilar is the terrace above them, a short steep climb with the river in view, and the cathedral is the skyline on the Porto side, not a stop here.
