From Ribeira Square up to Porto Cathedral, São Bento station and the Clérigos Church. One climb from the river to the upper Baixa. Gaia stays on the far bank.

From Ribeira square up to Porto cathedral, São Bento station and the Clérigos church.
Start at the cathedral in the morning and walk down, or come up in the evening when tables go out on the Ribeira. The climb is hot at midday.
Worth a night if the cathedral and the river should both be on foot. The lanes are steep for a suitcase: Aliados is flatter than the water itself.

The climb from the river quay to the cathedral and on to Clérigos is steep and paved: start from below, at Ribeira, and the Douro stays behind you as a landmark. Gaia and the lodges are on the other bank, not this one.
