Smolny Cathedral, the Tauride Garden and the blocks where the city was a chancellery. The facades here are about office, not about Nevsky’s shop window.

Smolny Cathedral, the Tauride Garden and the quarters where a facade means a state office.
By day: the cathedral and the garden. In the evening the garden stays alive longer than the offices.
Far for a first night. Worth it if you want quiet by the garden and do not mind the ride to the centre.

Smolny and the Tauride Garden are on the same side of the city, and they are separate places: Shpalernaya and Tavricheskaya lie between them. Walk the garden from Tavricheskaya. See the cathedral from the square in front of it; from the embankment you get the side facade, and the main front is on the square.
