Chuo-dori, the lanes by Radio Kaikan

  • Anime
  • Electronics
  • Shops

Akihabara is gathered at the station. Chuo-dori is walled with signs for anime, games and radio parts. The big shops stand on the main street. Retro and small stock sit in the side streets. People come for the shelves, not for the house fronts.

Known for

Electric Town: anime, retro games, radio parts and the big shops on Chuo-dori.

Why go

By day, while the shops are open. On Sundays a stretch of Chuo-dori is given to people on foot, and the street gets denser. In the evening the game halls keep going. Early morning there is nothing to look at.

Where to stay

Worth a night only if the shelves are the reason. Loud by the station, with little residential quiet. Ueno and Ginza are a short ride on the line. Look for a quiet morning in another neighbourhood.

Local guide

Fedor Samorodov · guide

Use the Electric Town exit. Chuo-dori starts immediately. The large shops are on it, and the stranger shelves are in the side streets. Maid cafes sit on those side streets. They are a separate choice, not the whole neighbourhood.
