Ueno Park paths, Shinobazu pond, Ameyoko

  • Park
  • Museums
  • Market

Ueno is a park on the rise and a market under the tracks. Inside the park: museums, the zoo, and Shinobazu pond, with lotus in summer. Just south of the station, under the Yamanote line, Ameyoko runs on with fish, clothes and voices. It is a busy, working neighbourhood.

Known for

Ueno Park, with its museums, the zoo and Shinobazu pond. Under the tracks south of the station, the Ameyoko market.

Why go

Come by day, for the museums and the park. Ameyoko is still going when the galleries close, but the evening is not the point. The park empties, the market folds, and the night belongs somewhere else.

Where to stay

Useful if the morning is for museums and you want a major station, including trains north. Around Ameyoko it is tight and loud. For a quiet night, Yanaka is a walk away.

Local guide

The museums and the pond are north of the station, inside the park. Ameyoko is south, under the tracks between Ueno and Okachimachi. Do the park first, then the market. Otherwise the galleries close while you are still at the stalls.
