The Act restoring Lithuania's independence was adopted here on March 11, 1990. Ten months later, after Soviet forces attacked the television facilities, crowds surrounded the building with barricades, bonfires, songs and prayers, waiting for an assault that never came; surviving barricade fragments remain beside the parliament.
