Why it is worth the detour
These gates once controlled the fortified road west toward Friedrichshamn, forcing travellers through successive walls, ditches and a ravelin. The surrounding trenches later acquired a darker history: after White forces captured Vyborg in April 1918, Russian civilians were among those executed near the gates.
The Friedrichshamn Gate is a historical architectural landmark that once controlled a key fortified road. It is notable for its role in the events following the capture of Vyborg in 1918.

150 m
Ravelin Gate
A traveller leaving eighteenth-century Vyborg had to pass the Friedrichshamn Gate, cross the ditch onto a detached ravelin and then go through this second stone gateway. A new highway cut through the fortifications in 1865, leaving the former military approach as a quiet pedestrian route where the old defensive choreography is still legible.

Peter I Monogram Rock
A carved monogram and cross on this high rock traditionally mark the command position from which Peter I observed or directed the 1710 bombardment of Vyborg. The carving's personal authorship is legendary rather than proven, but the site became a focus of imperial memory and offers a direct view toward the conquered castle. 300 m
Petrovskaya Embankment
In the sixteenth century, poorer townspeople began settling on this shore partly to escape the customs duties charged for trading inside walled Vyborg. Their improvised wooden suburb was later cleared for barracks, supply stores and powder magazines, turning a haven for duty avoidance into a tightly controlled military landscape.

Krepostnoy Bridge in Vyborg
The first permanent bridge across the Krepostnoy Strait in Vyborg, connecting the historic city center with Tverdysh Island.
