Café Central
Around 1900, Café Central functioned as an unofficial headquarters for Vienna’s intellectual life, with regulars including Peter Altenberg, Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud, Adolf Loos, and the exiled Leon Trotsky. Trotsky’s later role in the Russian Revolution gave particular bite to the contemporary joke that the unassuming chess player known as Bronstein might someday overturn an empire.
