Bank of the Nordic Countries Building

Its original Swedish and Finnish inscriptions advertised the multilingual commercial world of imperial-era Vyborg, while the banking hall was designed almost like a temple with the vault occupying the place of an altar. Site of the New Vyborg Cathedral

This open site once held the red-brick neo-Gothic cathedral nicknamed the “Vyborg Notre-Dame.” Bombing damaged it in 1939–1944, but its final disappearance was deliberate: the remaining walls were blown up and cleared in 1953 for a Soviet theater that was never built.
