Carlo Amoretti was an eighteenth-century ecclesiastic, scholar, writer, and scientist. After entering the Augustinian order in 1757, he studied in Pavia and Parma, taught ecclesiastical law, and developed his knowledge of several ancient and modern languages. He also explored the cave at the Pertugio Spring in Como and documented the excursion in a letter.
