Caroline of Brunswick was Princess of Wales and later queen consort of King George IV, from whom she was estranged. Their troubled marriage, her restricted access to their daughter and her opposition to the king’s attempt to divorce her contributed to her popularity in Britain. Caroline moved to Italy in 1814 and owned Villa d’Este in Como from 1815 to 1820.
