Maya Angelou was an American memoirist, essayist, poet, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several poetry collections, and works for stage and screen. Active in the Civil Rights Movement, she worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. In the Como area, she was among the creative figures hosted by the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center at Villa Serbelloni.
Born Marguerite Annie Johnson in 1928, Angelou became a poet and writer after holding various jobs in young adulthood. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement and worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was published in 1969 and recounts her life up to age 17. It brought her international recognition and became the first in a series of seven autobiographies.
In 1993, Angelou recited her poem On the Pulse of Morning at Bill Clinton's first inauguration. She was the first poet to give an inaugural recitation since Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961.
