Foundational contributions to atomic structure and quantum theory, including the Bohr model and the principle of complementarity.

Niels Bohr

Niels Bohr was a Danish theoretical physicist and philosopher who made foundational contributions to atomic structure and quantum theory. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922 and later advocated international cooperation on nuclear energy. He attended an international congress in Como in 1927 and appears in its group photograph.

Worth knowing

Physicist and philosopher

Bohr was born in 1885 and died in 1962. He explored the philosophical implications of modern physics and mentored and collaborated with several physicists.

The Bohr model of the atom

Bohr proposed that electrons occupy stable orbits around the atomic nucleus and can move between discrete energy levels. Although later models supplanted this picture, its underlying principles remain valid.

Escape from occupied Denmark

During the 1930s, Bohr helped refugees from Nazism. After learning in 1943 that German forces were about to arrest him, he fled occupied Denmark for Sweden and was then flown to Britain.

The 1927 congress in Como

Bohr attended the 1927 international congress in Como and appears in the gathering's group photograph associated with the Nobel Room at the Carducci Institute.
