Why it is worth the detour

A torch-like white dome inside the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts commemorates the painters who argued that Chinese painting should absorb modern life and selected foreign techniques rather than merely copy old masters. Statues of Gao Jianfu, Gao Qifeng, and Chen Shuren stand before the building, which was completed in 1991 and substantially restored before reopening in 2024.

The Lingnan School Memorial Hall is a museum dedicated to painters who advocated for integrating modern life and foreign techniques into Chinese painting. It features statues of prominent artists and was restored before reopening in 2024.

Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning Memorial Museum

The museum occupies the former offices of the agricultural and industrial school that He Xiangning established as a living memorial to her assassinated husband. Its story is less a static tribute than a widow's political response: she converted grief into a school meant to train a new generation for national reconstruction. Former Site of the First National Labour Congress

More than 170 labor representatives gathered in this former machine-workers' guild hall in May 1922, attempting to unite China's fragmented unions into a national movement. The site was forgotten so thoroughly that its identity required years of research to re-establish; the original hall, timber staircase and other early fabric survived the lapse in memory.
