Why it is worth the detour
Built in 1600, this pagoda stood on what was then a river island beside the Whampoa anchorage. For captains arriving to trade at Canton, its silhouette served as a navigational marker and announced that their ships were approaching the compulsory stopping place below the Thirteen Factories.
The Pazhou Pagoda, built in 1600, is an octagonal tower on Pazhou Island in Guangzhou. It served as a crucial navigational landmark for merchant ships and is a notable example of early modern Chinese architecture.
