Snetogorsky Monastery

Why it is worth the detour

In March 1299, Livonian knights suddenly attacked and burned this undefended monastery, killing Abbot Joasaph and seventeen monks along with other refugees. Prince Dovmont drove the raiders away the following day, making Snetogorsky a grim surviving setting for one of the frontier republic's defining crises.

The Snetogorsky Monastery is an active women's monastery in Pskov, one of the oldest surviving monasteries in the region, first mentioned in the 13th century. It is located on the high right bank of the Velikaya River, 3.5 km from the city center.
