Sheremetev Palace
Former serf actress Praskovia Kovalyova-Zhemchugova spent her final years here after secretly marrying Count Nikolai Sheremetev and receiving reluctant recognition as his wife. A grand White Hall was planned for their wedding celebrations, but it was not finished in their lifetime; Praskovia died in the palace only weeks after giving birth.

Joseph Brodsky's One and a Half Rooms
Brodsky shared part of this vast communal apartment with his parents from 1955 until Soviet authorities forced him to emigrate in 1972. He returned here after his prosecution and northern exile for alleged social parasitism, and later transformed the awkwardly partitioned home into the autobiographical essay In a Room and a Half.

Annenkirche
This Lutheran church passed through decades of secular reuse before a catastrophic fire on the night of December 5–6, 2002 gutted its interior shortly after its return to the congregation. Rather than concealing every scar, its revival as a church and cultural venue made the blackened walls part of the experience—a hidden ruin still living inside an eighteenth-century shell.

Baka House
Behind the ornate street facade lies one of Petersburg's most theatrical courtyard wells: rear wings are linked by two elevated covered galleries, creating an Escher-like vertical maze. Artist Léon Bakst kept a studio in the building during the era of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, connecting this hidden domestic machinery to the glittering world of stage design.
