Sololaki climbs up from Freedom Square and hangs over the Old Town. Merchants built it in the late 19th and early 20th century: Art Nouveau facades, courtyards and entrance halls painted from floor to ceiling. In Soviet years the houses were split among many families, so some of the painting wore away, but a few stairwells survived. Evenings are quieter than on Shardeni, because people live on these streets.

The day is for the houses and the courtyards. The evening is for wine: cellars on Tabidze, Lermontov and the streets beside them, without the Old Town shopfront. The ridge above the quarter, by Kartlis Deda, is its own climb if you want the view.
A good first base. Meidan is a short walk downhill, and the windows more often face a courtyard than a restaurant street. Anyone who wants music under the window should sleep down in the Old Town.

The painted hall is someone else's stairwell. Step only through a door that is already open, and keep your voice down. Do not ask for a closed door to be opened.
