Why it is worth the detour
The corner beside the Shibuya tax office was once part of Tokyo’s military prison, where nineteen convicted leaders and ideological supporters of the coup were executed by firing squad in 1936 and 1937. Supporters erected the memorial in 1965 on or near the former execution ground, creating an uneasy memorial to both rebellion and repression.
The February 26 Incident Memorial Statue marks the site near Tokyo's former military prison where leaders of a failed 1936 coup were executed. It serves as a reminder of both rebellion and repression in Japan's history.
