Narcissus Spring

Perché vale la deviazione

Ludwig Nicolay turned an older belief that the spring cured eye ailments into the tale of the nymph Silmia, whose waters restored the sight of her lovesick shepherd Lars. Anna Kern praised its exceptionally cold, clear water after visiting in 1829 with Mikhail Glinka and Anton Delvig; wartime and later construction damage disrupted the spring, which flowed properly again after the 2017–2022 restoration.

Narcissus Spring is a historical spring located in Monrepos Park, Vyborg, Russia, famous for its clear water and the romantic legend of the nymph Silmia. Restored between 2017 and 2022, it offers a serene spot with historical significance.

Che cosa c’è nei paraggi

I luoghi raccontati più vicini, con la distanza in linea d’aria da qui.

  • 150 m

    Hermit's Hut

This rustic birch-log hut embodied the late-18th-century fashion for staged solitude, complete with biblical pictures and a wooden bell. Some European estates even employed people to impersonate hermits, while Monrepos family correspondence called this retreat simply "Solitude," blurring sincere contemplation and aristocratic theater.

  • 200 m

    Grotto of Wishes

This supposedly perilous cave is only about two steps deep, a deliberate joke in a landscape otherwise devoted to melancholy and reflection. Local tradition promises that a wish made inside will come true, and the tiny passage theatrically reveals one of the park's most dramatic rocky scenes.

  • 200 m

    Ludwigstein

A rocky necropolis island in the Mon Repos Park, known for its neo-Gothic chapel and historical significance.

  • 250 m

    Paulstein Rock and Terrace

Ludwig Nicolay named this high rock for his frequently absent son Paul and built him a small pavilion with a private garden scented by roses and mignonette. The pavilion vanished in the 1940s, leaving the restored terrace and plantings as the trace of a father's attempt to lure his son home.

  • 250 m

    Väinämöinen in St. Nicholas Gorge

The first statue placed here in 1831 predated publication of the first Kalevala collection by four years, so its sculptor imagined the rune-singer as a classical hero with a Roman tunic and lyre-like instrument. Vandals destroyed it in 1871; Johannes Takanen's replacement was lost during the Second World War, and the present figure was reconstructed from photographs in 2007.
