Pliny the Younger

Pliny the Younger was a Roman lawyer, author, and magistrate who lived from 61 to around 113. He held civil and military offices and served as an imperial magistrate under Emperor Trajan. Of the 369 letters he wrote, 247 survive.

Raised by Pliny the Elder

Born Gaius Caecilius, he became known as Pliny the Younger. His uncle, Pliny the Elder, helped raise and educate him.

Surviving Letters

Pliny wrote 369 letters, of which 247 survive. They include correspondence with emperors, friends, and figures such as the historian Tacitus.

Correspondence with Trajan

The surviving correspondence includes 121 official letters addressed to Emperor Trajan. They are among the few surviving records of relations between the imperial office and provincial governors.

Contemporary Connections

Pliny was a friend of the historian Tacitus and may have employed the biographer Suetonius. During his time in Syria, he also met the philosophers Artemidorus and Euphrates the Stoic.
